Perrin slams Lyon staff after getting the boot

Former Lyon coach Alain Perrin has accused the president and coaching staff at the club of plotting against him during his time in charge.

Perrin parted ways with Les Gones in mid-June, despite becoming the first coach in the club's history to lead the side to a league and cup double.

Club president Jean-Michel Aulas blamed Lyon's lack of progress in Europe as the reason behind Perrin's departure, but the former Portsmouth boss believes he has been made a scapegoat for the club's shortcomings.

'I soon understood with him (Aulas), in his announcements to the press, that I would always be responsible for everything that went wrong,' Perrin told France Football.

'The president often tells his stories in his way. And when you want to kill your dog, you say it has a bad temperament.'

While Perrin felt Aulas was trying to manipulate his image in the press, he named goalkeeping coach Joel Bats and fitness coach Robert Duverne as the two men most responsible for trying to damage his status within the club.

It had long been rumoured that Perrin's relationship with the two coaches had been strained, and the former boss admitted he felt these two were the main culprits in bringing his time at the Stade Gerland to an early end.

'After about two weeks, I soon understood. The pair of them were systematically in opposition,' he said of Bats and Duverne.

'There was always an underlying but permanent aggressive way about them. They were trying to turn the players and (club adviser) Bernard Lacombe against me. But he (Lacombe) was always fine with me, one of my rare supporters.

'You had to act like they wanted you to, or they would start to moan. With those two there I often felt like a beginner in the job.'

Perrin went on to suggest that the two coaches, who have been at the club for all of Lyon's seven successive league title wins, had been against him from the start and would have preferred someone else to have been appointed following the departure of Gerard Houllier in 2007.

He continued: 'They would have liked someone else to have taken over after Gerard, someone like Remi Garde (Lyon assistant coach).

'I always spoke directly to the players because I knew they (Bats and Duverne) were talking badly about me behind my back. Duverne and Bats polluted the atmosphere.'

From a personal point of view, Perrin admitted he looked back on his single season at Lyon with frustration because of the club directors.

'We won plenty of titles, we had a magnificent season, but I leave with great frustration over the way the club is run,' he admitted. 'I haven't enjoyed myself and, on a personal level, it's without doubt the most unpleasant season I've experienced.

'It seems paradoxical when you think about what we won, but I feel like I've spent the year gagged and bound and like I've not been able to express myself in my job.'
