PSV Eindhoven midfielder Edison Mendez has been left out of the Ecuador squad to face Argentina on Sunday after failing to recover from injury.
Mendez, who made a surprise return to the national side last month after coming out of international retirement, was told he will remain in the squad for the next home match against Colombia.
Coach Sixto Vizuete will also have to do without injured Liga de Quito defender Jairo Campos, who returned to his club ahead of the Copa Libertadores final with Brazilian side Fluminense on June 25.
Despite the absentees Ecuadorian FA president Luis Chiriboga promised fans a strong Ecuador side.
'Sadly we didn't have time to recover Campos and Mendez, but Ecuador will have a strong team against Argentina,' he said.
