Markarian resigns as coach of Cruz Azul

MEXICO CITY, June 6 (Apertura Tournament) - Sergio Markarian has resigned as coach of Cruz Azul after opting not to renew his contract with the Mexican giants.

Markarian was offered a new one-year deal but the Uruguayan cited differences with the club's board for his decision to walk away.

'There are some differences with the board, but I don't want to make a scandal,' the 63-year-old told a press conference. 'I only want to thank president Eduardo De La Torre and the fans.'

Markarian had been seeking to make two major signings to reinforce his squad ahead of the Apertura Tournament, but the board wanted him to focus on developing young talent through the youth system.

'I think the team needs players with more experience in order to win a title, but there is no problem. We simply had different ideas,' he said.

Markarian added that he hoped to move into international football next.

Under his guidance, Cruz Azul reached the Apertura final but lost to Santos Laguna. Six months ago, they lost to champions Atlanta at the quarter-final stage.
