Rebel Mendez recalled to Ecuador squad

QUITO, May 31 (Reuters) - Midfielder Edison Mendez has been included in Ecuador's squad for World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Colombia after going back on his decision to quit the national side. The PSV Eindhoven player, who had criticised the decision to promote former under-20 coach Sixto Vizuete to lead the senior side, said in February that he was worn out by the travelling. But in May he changed his mind and apologised for his previous comments. Goalkeeper Jose Cevallos, who played in the 2002 World Cup, was recalled along with full back Ulises de la Cruz, who was left out for the previous two games last November. Cevallos was one of six players from Libertadores Cup semi-finalists and Ecuadorean champions LDU to be included. Ecuador, who qualified for the last two World Cups, have taken three points from their first four games in the 10-team South American group. They visit Argentina on June 15 and are home to neighbours Colombia in Quito three days later. Goalkeepers: Jose Cevallos (LDU), Marcelo Elizaga (Emelec), Maximo Banguera (Espoli) Defenders: Ulises De la Cruz (Reading), Omar De Jesus (Barcelona-Guayaquil), Isaac Mina (Deportivo Quito), Paul Ambrossi (LDU), Ivan Hurtado (Barcelona-Guayaquil), Giovanny Espinoza (Cruzeiro), Carlos Castro (Barcelona-Guayaquil), Jairo Campos (LDU) Midfielders: Patricio Urrutia (LDU), Segundo Castillo (Red Star Belgrade), Antonio Valencia (Wigan Athletic), Luis Bolanos (LDU), Edison Mendez (PSV Eindhoven), Walter Ayovi (El Nacional), Luis Fernando Saritama (Deportivo Quito), David Quiroz (Barcelona) Forwards: Felipe Caicedo (Manchester City), Joffre Guerron (LDU), Carlos Tenorio (Al Sadd), Cristian Benitez (Santos Laguna)
