Hartley hoping Strachan doesn't quit Celtic

Celtic midfielder Paul Hartley sees no reason why manager Gordon Strachan would want to leave the Parkhead club.

Strachan became the first Celtic boss since Jock Stein to win three titles in succession when he finished off the season with a 1-0 win over Dundee United at Tannadice last week.

The former Coventry and Southampton boss also guided the Parkhead club to the last 16 of the Champions League for the second season running but there is speculation surrounding his appetite for another season in the Old Firm goldfish bowl.

However, 31-year-old Hartley is confident Strachan will be at the helm going into the new season.

He said: 'I don't see any reason why he won't be here. It doesn't come any better than Celtic.

'There aren't many bigger teams out there. We are probably one of the top clubs in the world.

'I'm sure the manager will have his own thoughts but as far as we are concerned he will be here next season.

'I'm pretty positive he will want to stay because he wants more success.'

Hartley accepts that Strachan's record since he took over at Parkhead three seasons ago is bound to attract attention from other clubs.

But the former Hearts player insists Celtic can improve again next season.

He said: 'It is part and parcel of the game.

'We know what he has done and his track record speaks for itself. It is second to none.

'He has won the league the last two years and got us into the last 16 of the Champions League twice.

'We want to try and get a wee bit further than that.

'Next season we will be a bit wiser in the Champions League because we know the quality we are coming up against.

'That is a big thing because when we got to the group stages it was a new experience for a lot of the boys.

'I definitely think we can make it through to the last eight, there is no doubt about that.

'We were leading Barcelona and with a little bit more luck we could have beaten them in the last-16 stage this season.'
