Crew investigating fan's racial remark
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus Crew MLS soccer team is investigating a racial slur made by a fan toward New England Revolution players that was captured on camera and posted on the video-sharing Web site YouTube.
Forward Kheli Dube scored in the 89th minute of a 1-0 win Saturday night in Columbus. Video from a camera pointed at the field shows Dube, who is black, celebrating with teammates. An off-camera voice can be heard shouting and using a racial epithet while bottles and streamers are thrown at the players.
"We appreciate the energy and support we receive from our fans and understand that emotions run high during games," the Crew said in a statement. "But there is no excuse for the reprehensible behavior exhibited by the fan heard in the video clip."
A statement from Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber said that the league is investigating incidents during the match.
