Moenchengladbach win promotion to Bundesliga
BERLIN, May 7 (Reuters) - Borussia Moenchengladbach clinched promotion back to the German first division by winning 3-0 at home to Wehen Wiesbaden on Wednesday.
Gladbach, who finished eight points adrift at the bottom of the Bundesliga last season, can celebrate an immediate return to the top flight after moving eight points clear of Mainz 05 in fourth place with two games to play.
Borussia Moenchengladbach used to be among the biggest names in European football. They were Bundesliga champions five times in the 1970s, won the UEFA Cup in 1975 and 1979 and reached the European Cup final in 1977.
'This young team have given everything this season,' sporting director Christian Ziege told reporters. 'Now it's time for them to celebrate.'
Cologne and 1899 Hoffenheim boosted their chances of taking the other two promotion places with important wins on Wednesday.
Cologne are in second on 57 points, while Hoffenheim are third a point further back. Mainz are fourth on 55.
