Huddersfield chairman lauds Ternent appointment

Huddersfield chairman Ken Davy has predicted a bright future for the club after appointing Stan Ternent as manager.

The former Burnley boss has joined the Coca-Cola League One outfit after being given permission to talk to the Terriers by Barclays Premier League strugglers Derby, where he had been an assistant to Paul Jewell.

The 61-year-old has signed a three-year deal at the Galpharm Stadium and is joined by former Huddersfield favourite Ronnie Jepson, the pair charged with leading their new club into the Championship in next season's centenary campaign.

Davy said: ``For our centenary, we were determined to appoint someone with a successful record in the third tier of English football.

``Stan is very experienced and his pedigree at this level speaks for itself.

``His promotions to the second tier with Bury and Burnley meant he stood head and shoulders above the other applicants.

``As well as having been there and done it, he has all the necessary qualifications and credentials to take Town to the next level.

``He is widely respected in the football world and, having discussed the appointment with some of the best known characters in football, we knew we were making the right choice.''

Ternent takes over from director of football development Gerry Murphy, who had been in charge of first-team affairs following the sacking of Andy Ritchie on April 1.

Jepson, who scored 42 goals in 125 appearances for the Terriers between 1993 and 1996 - including promotion to what was then Division One - also applied for the manager's job.

He resigned as Gillingham boss in September after a poor start to the season but is no stranger to Ternent, who signed him as a player at Burnley and Bury and took him to Priestfield.

Davy added: ``As for Ronnie Jepson, his desire to be at Huddersfield Town was obvious when he applied for the managerial role.

``His relationship with the club stretches back over a decade and, having previously played for and worked with Stan, all parties are convinced there is no one better for him to team up with.

``Our ultimate aim next season is promotion to the Championship and Stan has all the necessary traits.

``He is a well known disciplinarian, which is one of the important qualities we looked for in this appointment.

``He also has a good record of bringing through players and will embrace Gerry Murphy's principle of developing our stars for the future.''

The Terriers currently sit 12th in League One, 10 points adrift of the play-off places, and host Walsall in their final home game of the campaign on Saturday.

They wrap up the season with a trip to relegated Luton on May 3.
