Stuttgart win game in hand to climb to sixth place
BERLIN, March 11 (Reuters) - VfB Stuttgart won 1-0 away to Energie Cottbus on Tuesday to move back into contention for a place in Europe next season.
Fernando Meira got the only goal for last season's Bundesliga champions when he headed in from a corner with half an hour gone.
Stuttgart have little hope of a successful title defence after a dreadful start to the season but their latest win, in a match postponed from March 1 because of a storm warning, puts them right back into the race for UEFA Cup berths.
With 23 games played they move up to sixth place with 37 points. The top five places in Germany give definite access to Europe, while sixth place might be enough depending on who wins the main Cup competition.
Stuttgart remain 13 points behind leaders Bayern but are now within a point of Schalke 04 in fifth place and five points behind Hamburg SV in the third and final Champions League spot.
