Perez and Dorrance elected to Hall of Fame

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Forward Hugo Perez and women's coach Anson Dorrance were elected Monday to the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

No candidates received the necessary 75 percent from the player ballot, with Preki Radosavljevic topping the list at 67.97 percent, followed by Joy Fawcett (67.19), Jeff Agoos (58.59), Thomas Dooley (55.47) and Marco Etcheverry (53.12).

Perez, who scored 13 goals in 73 games for the U.S. national team from 1884-94, was on 58.33 percent of the veteran player ballots -- in which 50 percent was need. He was followed by Kyle Rote Jr. (45.83) and Desmond Armstrong and Glenn Myernick (43.75 each).

Dorrance was coach of the U.S. women's team for eight years starting in 1986 and led the Americans to a 65-22-5 record and the title of the first Women's World Cup in 1994. He received 58.33 percent on the builder's ballot, followed by Bruce Arena (44.08), Bob Gansler (44.23) and Chuck Blazer (42.31).

Dorrance became coach of the men's and women's teams at North Carolina, in 1979, then gave up the men's job after the 1988 season. He's won 19 national championships in 28 seasons with the women and has a 846-32-19 record; with the men he had a 172-65-21 record.

Former North Carolina players player Melissa Jennings and Debbie Keller filed a sexual harassment suit against Dorrance in 1998, a case that was settled in January. Jennings receive $385,000 as part of the settlement, mostly for attorney's fees.

Dorrance denied harassing his players, but in an apology letter sent almost 10 years ago he acknowledged participating in banter of a "jesting or teasing nature" with groups of players. The settlement required Dorrance to write a similar letter to Jennings acknowledging he was part of group discussions with players about their sexual relationships.
