Scotland boss Burley to consult Old Firm on squad

Scotland boss George Burley has promised to consult Old Firm managers Gordon Strachan and Walter Smith before naming his first squad.

Burley leads Scotland for the first time on March 26 when Croatia visit Hampden for a friendly, three days before Celtic and Rangers meet in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

The Old Firm have been hit hard by a fixture backlog and Burley will hold talks over the fitness of players.

'I will speak to the Old Firm managers before we play Croatia,' he said.

'Communication is very important and I appreciate it's a hectic schedule - it's been especially hard for the Old Firm.

But he added: 'I want a strong squad and the right result against Croatia. It's important as it's my first match.'

Meanwhile, Burley is set to have two more Hampden friendlies before his first competitive match, a World Cup qualifier in Macedonia in September.

SFA chief executive Gordon Smith said: 'We are in talks with nations about games in May and August.

'We are talking about home games, probably both at Hampden, but the second may be at another ground.

'We had Belgium lined up to come here in May, but then they pulled out.

'Their boss loses players to an Olympic squad around then and he didn't want to come without them.

'As for August, that will be shortly before we head to Macedonia, so we want a team from that region.'
