Romanian FA ends league's right to appoint refs

BUCHAREST, Feb 21 (Reuters) - The Romanian Football Association (FRF) is to start appointing referees instead of the local Professional League (LPF) in a bid to prevent top clubs naming 'home' officials for key matches.

'The FRF has decided to end the Professional League's right to appoint referees,' FRF general director Ionut Lupescu told Reuters on Thursday.

'The FRF can't tolerate it any more as refereeing activity had fallen under the control of club owners and presidents.'

Romanian soccer has been marred by endless refereeing scandals in the last two decades.

'A group of clubs want to control refereeing activity as an efficient way to rig some matches,' said Lupescu.

But the FRF official came under attack from LPF president Dumitru Dragomir.

'Lupescu wants to control refereeing activity himself,' said Dragomir. 'The best solution is to have the referees under the LPF's control.'

The Romanian championship resumes this weekend after a winter break with CFR Cluj top on 46 points. Second-placed Rapid Bucharest have 41 while Unirea Urziceni and Steaua Bucharest are on 38.
