Report: Ronaldo out nine months after surgery

PARIS -- An operation to repair a ruptured tendon in Ronaldo's left knee "went well," and the Milan striker will be sidelined for about nine months, the sports newspaper L'Equipe reported Friday.

After the two-hour operation Thursday evening at Pitie-Salpetriere hospital, the three-time FIFA World Player of the Year is likely to need about 10 days of physical therapy, L'Equipe said.

"The operation went well," said Dr. Gerard Saillant, who operated on a similar problem on the Brazilian's right knee in 2000, told the sports daily. Saillant also participated in Thursday's operation by Dr. Eric Rolland.

"The intervention was of the same type as the one in 2000. The healing period should now last nine months," Saillant said.

Ronaldo was injured in Milan's 1-1 draw Wednesday with Livorno in Italy's Serie A. He arrived at the Paris hospital on Thursday in the back seat of a car with his leg in a brace and an ice pack on his knee.

Ronaldo has battled serious injuries throughout his career, and has played sparingly since joining Milan from Real Madrid in January 2007.

Wednesday's match was only his fifth in Serie A this season after injuring his thigh during preseason training on July 31. He returned in November, but has been in and out of the team due to a series of recurring problems.
