Guatemala coach Gomez quits after string of losses

GUATEMALA CITY -- Hernan Gomez quit as Guatemala's national soccer coach after a string of defeats, including a recent 5-0 loss to Argentina.

Gomez began coaching the team in April 2006. He coached Ecuador to a spot in the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan but was unable to achieve similar success with Guatemala.

"It would be a failure if I had been coaching Argentina," he said at a news conference Friday. "It would be a failure if I had been coaching Italy. But with all respect, it's not a failure because Guatemala has never won anything."

His resignation came two days after the loss to Argentina in an exhibition game in Los Angeles.

On June 14, Guatemala will host its CONCACAF second-round qualifier against the winner of the first-round series between Turks and Caicos Islands and St Lucia. Turks and Caicos won the first leg 2-1 on Wednesday.
