Scottish FA reveal desire to host Euro 2012

The Scottish Football Association will offer to step in to host Euro 2012 if UEFA take the tournament away from Poland and Ukraine.

UEFA in the last week have cited recent 'political instability' in Poland and Ukraine as a cause for concern and have called for both countries to prove they are ready for the hosting responsibilities.

European football's governing body have vowed to support both countries as far as possible but UEFA president Michel Platini is aware of the potential for 'critical slippage' in the planning and has pinpointed the coming six months as a crucial stage for both co-hosts.

UEFA chose the Poland-Ukraine bid over submissions from Italy and Croatia-Hungary.

SFA chief executive Gordon Smith confirmed Scotland would be potential hosts in the event of UEFA inviting new bids for the 2012 tournament. Scotland are already expected to bid to stage the Euro 2016 finals.

Smith told the Sunday Herald: 'If Poland and Ukraine pulled out we would put Scotland forward and say we wanted to be considered for it.

'In the meantime, we'd speak to the Scottish government and try to get a feasibility study done as to the costs and what's required in terms of stadium upgrades.'
