Le Roy expecting Ghana axe if hosts fail to win

ACCRA, Jan 29 (Reuters) - Ghana coach Claude Le Roy expects to be fired if the host nation fail to win the African Nations Cup.

'If we are not champions, I'm sure a new coach will come in my place,' he told a news conference on Tuesday.

'My desire would be to stay on here and prepare for the 2010 World Cup, where I think Ghana could really do something.

'But I understand my deal and that is to win the cup,' said the Frenchman, who takes charge of a team at a record sixth Nations Cup tournament.

'You can't work when people lose confidence in you. It is difficult to be a coach in Africa, more difficult than any other place in the world.'

But he added: 'I'm dreaming of being champion once more.'

Le Roy was coach of Cameroon when they won in 1988. He also reached the final with Cameroon in 1986 and coached Senegal in the 1990 and 1992 tournaments, before taking charge of Democratic Republic of Congo for the 2006 finals.

'I have gotten to the quarter-finals in all my previous tournaments. Now the most important task is to get past this quarter-final,' he said.

Ghana play in Accra on Sunday against the team finishing second in Group B, which is concluded later on Tuesday.

'I don't want to be out before my birthday,' said Le Roy, who turns 60 on Feb. 6, four days before the final in Accra.
