Hutton on the brink of completing Spurs deal

Alan Hutton is on the brink of completing his £9million transfer from Rangers to Tottenham.

Rangers manager Walter Smith believes a deal for the 23-year-old Scotland defender is almost done, and it could be completed this afternoon.

Smith said: 'He's currently in London and I think the clubs and Alan Hutton have all reached agreement.

'It would look as though after the remaining formalities that he will join Spurs.'

Hutton rejected the chance to move to White Hart Lane earlier in the month and it appeared as though he would stay with Rangers until the end of the season.

He had a change of heart though and visited London on Sunday before returning to Glasgow.

However he jetted back to London today, with Rangers still happy for the big-money deal to go through.

Smith admitted he was not privy to the reasons behind Hutton's decision to leave, having been so reluctant to leave just weeks ago.

'You would have to ask Alan that,' said Smith.

'The clubs agreed a fee a number of weeks ago so that agreement was in place and it was just down to Alan. You'd have to ask him for his reasoning.

'I know he was enjoying his football here and was not in too much of a rush to go anywhere, but as the weeks went on he has decided it is the right time for him to leave. We wish him well.

'There is disappointment throughout the club to lose him but it was an offer we couldn't turn down.'
