Olympiakos thrash Panathinaikos to progress
ATHENS, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Olympiakos Piraeus reached the Greek Cup quarter-finals with an ultimately convincing 4-0 win over arch-rivals Panathinaikos on Wednesday.
Expectations for an exciting game were high after their dramatic league clash on Sunday ended in a 1-1 draw.
This time, however, it was a more one-sided affair because although both sides created plenty of openings only Olympiakos capitalised on their chances.
Lomana LuaLua put the home side ahead in the sixth minute when he controlled the ball on his chest and then fired a superb volley into the net from 25 metres.
Panathinaikos almost equalised several times, notably in the 54th minute when Dimitris Salpigidis was one-on-one with goalkeeper Antonis Nikopolidis who beat the shot away.
LuaLua was also instrumental in the second goal after 63 minutes. His shot was parried by Mario Galinovic into the path of Vassilis Torossidis who scored from the rebound.
Two minutes later the game was over as Panathinaikos defender Josu Sarriegi chested a cross directly into the path of Darko Kovacevic who swept the ball home.
Lionel Nunez completed the scoring with a spectacular volley 10 minutes from time.
In the other last 16 game played on Wednesday, 10-man Atromitos Athinon beat Asteras Tripolis thanks to a goal two minutes into added time from Giorgos Korakakis.
Brazilian midfielder Marcelo Oliveira was sent off in the 63rd minute after hitting Asteras' Argentine forward Filomeno.
Super League clubs Aris, Larissa -- who are the Greek Cup holders -- and Xanthi are already in the quarter-finals along with second division Thrasyvoulos.
OFI Crete and Agrotikos Asteras face a replay while Iraklis face Panionios on Thursday.
