Young prodigy Benny signs for the Jets

The Newcastle Jets have signed 15-year-old Ben Kantarovski, snaring the A-League's youngest ever player on a four-year deal.

The midfielder, who has just completed year 10 and will continue at Lambton High School this year, could even figure in the Jets' current campaign as a replacement for the injured Steve Eagleton.

A Joeys representative and member of the Jets' trainee squad, Kantarovski turns 16 on January 20 but will be available to play with the Jets as a 15-year-old against Perth on January 18.

"Obviously he has a lot of talent," Jets coach Gary van Egmond said.

"He now has the opportunity to hone his craft and needs to establish himself in the squad and push for selection in the 11.

"His future is very bright. His signature was hotly contested, I know the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport) was also looking for him to sign.

"He would have been their youngest signing but he has chosen to play for his local club and represent his home town and I think that says a lot about the Jets and Ben."
