Sweden manager to stay on through 2010 World Cup

STOCKHOLM -- Lars Lagerback has extended his contract as manager of the Swedish national soccer team through the 2010 World Cup, the Swedish Football Association said on Friday.

Lagerback has been manager since 2000, the first four years as joint manager with Tommy Soderberg. He was assistant manager to Sodeberg for two years from 1998.

Lagerback has taken the Swedish team to five consecutive international championships starting with Euro 2000. For three of the championships, he was joint manager with Soderberg.

"It will be a delightful and big challenge to take Sweden to a sixth championship in a row, which it will be if we qualify for the World Cup in South Africa in 2010," Lagerback, who will become Sweden's longest-serving coach, said.

The association said assistant manager Roland Andersson had also extended his contract to the end of 2010.
