Wenger escapes extended Champions League ban

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has escaped further sanction from UEFA following his one-match touchline ban in the Champions League.

The Gunners boss had to watch the final Group H game against Steaua Bucharest from the stands at Emirates Stadium as punishment for confronting the fourth official during the 3-1 away defeat by Sevilla.

Europe's governing body could have extended that sanction to the first leg of Arsenal's last-16 match, as they did with Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard for a similar offence.

However, UEFA's control and disciplinary body have ruled a one-match ban, which has already been served, will suffice.

Wenger had watched the final minutes of the Sevilla match from the tunnel instead of moving to the stand as he was asked.

It is understood the Frenchman stated in his defence that there were reasons he was unable to move to the stands.

Arsenal are at Blackburn in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup tonight, where Wenger has named a young squad.

However, England under-21 forward Theo Walcott will not feature after withdrawing from the squad with illness.
