Boruc planning New Year derby for comeback

Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc has targeted the Old Firm clash on January 2 for his comeback from surgery.

The Poland goalkeeper is to have an operation on his troublesome knee in the coming days after the Hoops secured qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League despite last night's 1-0 defeat at AC Milan.

Benfica's 2-1 win against Shakhtar Donetsk sent Celtic through and there was more good news for manager Gordon Strachan when Boruc pledged to return for the Clydesdale Bank Premier League visit of Rangers early in the new year.

The 27-year-old said: 'I'm a little bit upset because I won't play the next few games, but I am happier that I can leave the team with us safely through to the next round.

'I will probably have the operation in Britain at the end of the week but certainly by the start of next week.

'It's not just my knee that hurts - I pulled my groin against Hearts.

'Overall though, the pain has not been too bad, I've had painkillers but not an injection.

'The specialist thinks that I will be out for about three weeks.

'I'll do everything in my power to be back for the Rangers game. I don't think that's an unrealistic aim. It's certainly my target.

'It's always a target to play Rangers, I love those games.'
