Former Wigan manager Paul Jewell has ruled out a return to the Premier League club.
Jewell, who resigned at the end of the last season, was the preferred choice of the Latics following the sacking of Chris Hutchings last week.
He was approached by club owner Dave Whelan over the vacancy but, after a short period to consider his options, decided against rejoining the club he guided to the top flight.
It is understand terms between the parties were not discussed.
Jewell's decision leaves the Wigan position wide open with the club not thought to have a top target.
Whelan and his board will now look through applications before formulating a plan to take the club forward.
Graeme Souness and Joe Royle are two other names to have been strongly linked with the position.
