In front of a season-high crowd of more than 1,200 the West Virginia women's soccer team won the Big East women's soccer championship by beating Notre Dame 5-3 on penalty kicks. The two teams had finished tied by the score of 1-1 in double overtime in the game held at WVU's Dick Dlesk Stadium.
The Irish jumped on the score board first with a goal by junior Kerri Hanks. Hanks netted home her team-leading 13th score of the year, beating WVU sophomore goalkeeper Mallory Beck.
The Mountaineers equalized when senior Kiley Harris headed in a low rebound into the net for her fourth goal of the year.
It was the first overtime match in the Big East championship title game since 2003 when Villanova and Boston College also decided the title on penalties.
