Krancjar sets Pompey's sights on Europe

Niko Kranjcar feels Portsmouth will only have themselves to blame if they do not secure European football this season. The south-coast club head into the weekend's fixtures sitting proudly in fifth place, just two points behind Chelsea and the Champions League spots. The visit of Sven-Goran Eriksson's impressive Manchester City side, who are third, will provide another stern test of just how far Pompey have come and are capable of going. Harry Redknapp has again strengthened his squad during the summer in a bid to push them on to the next level, having just missed out on a top-seven finish last season after fading during the closing weeks. Croatia midfielder Kranjcar, though, is convinced this time it will be different. 'We have to believe, that is why we are here, and our belief is this year we can definitely reach Europe,' he declared. 'It is what we are aiming for, where we as a team want to arrive. 'We are unbeaten in seven league games - that shows we do have the ability and the quality to get that far. 'Now it is up to us to make sure it happens.' Kranjcar told The Portsmouth News: 'We got so close last year and have built on that, and strengthened the squad. Now we are even stronger. 'We have spent money on great players and it is our goal. 'The higher the goal is the better it is - and it is up to us to work hard and achieve this thing together.'
