Barlow confident Latics will avoid the drop

Frank Barlow believes Wigan have enough good players to stay in the Premier League.

He is adamant the new manager 'will be encouraged' by the state of the club.

Barlow, 61, will take charge of the team for the first time on Sunday against Tottenham in his role as caretaker manager.

Chairman Dave Whelan is hunting for a new boss after the dismissal of Chris Hutchings following the defeat by Chelsea on Saturday.

It was Wigan's sixth successive defeat and Whelan felt a change was necessary.

According to Barlow they can get out of trouble.

'The person who comes in will be encouraged by the club. It is really healthy,' said the veteran coach, who has already ruled himself out of taking the role on a permanent basis.

'The squad here is good enough to stay in the league. I know they will give it everything they have got. We've had chances to win some games. We are not looking for yards we are looking for inches.

'The last 45 minutes against Chelsea was a good barometer to look at. We were two goals down in 18 minutes against one of the form teams in the league. But we did not crumble and were resilient.

'The players do feel a responsibility now Chris has gone and want to prove a point.'

Barlow, meanwhile, is hoping his former boss is not lost to the game.

'Chris is an excellent coach, ' he said. 'He did a very good job at Wigan. Results do not given an indication of the work that goes on. You cannot legislate for mistakes by players. We are all human, though, after all.'

Tottenham have also appointed a new manager in Juande Ramos but Mario Melchiot insists they have to focus on their own game.

Wigan's Dutch captain said: 'We cannot worry about Spurs having a new coach as we have problems of our own.

'We have to try and dig ourselves out of this situation. We need to stay close to each other, keep the spirit going and work as hard as we can.

'It would help if the people who come and watch us play, support us as they have been doing. It is important in times like these to stick together.'
