Portugal beats U.S. in Beach Soccer World Cup
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- The United States lost to Portugal 6-5 Tuesday at the 16-team Beach Soccer World Cup.
The Portuguese reached the quarterfinals from Group B. Spain clinched a spot as the Group B winner despite a 5-4 loss to Iran. The top two teams in each of the four groups advance.
Defending champion Brazil defeated Russia 5-4 on penalties at Copacabana Beach to remain unbeaten. Brazil, winners of 10 championships since 1995, was already assured a berth in the quarters. Its third consecutive win allowed it to finish atop Group A.
The result eliminated Russia and sent Mexico, a 6-3 winner over the Solomon Islands, into the final eight. Nigeria and Senegal are also in the quarterfinals. Italy, Uruguay, Japan, Argentina and France were in contention for the last two spots.
