Hutchings exit shows 'instability', insists Clark

League Managers' Association vice-chairman Frank Clark believes the departure of Chris Hutchings from Wigan is a further example of the 'instability' in the game.

Hutchings has parted company with the club after nearly six months in charge, and Clark is adamant the 50-year-old was not given enough time to make his mark at the club.

The Latics slipped into the bottom three after Saturday's defeat by Chelsea at the JJB Stadium.

Hutchings was promoted following Paul Jewell's resignation at the end of last season but won only two of his 14 matches in charge.

'I should say I'm surprised, but nothing surprises me in football anymore,' Clark told said.

'Chris will be bitterly disappointed, and I'm disappointed for him that it's been done so quickly.

'I think managers are being dismissed too hastily and it breeds instability in the game - it doesn't do the game any good at all.'

Hutchings is the 16th manager to leave an English club this season and Clark is keen to impress on chairmen that they may be better served sticking with their appointed bosses.

'The only thing we can do is to keep persuading chairmen that it's not in their best interest to get rid of managers,' he added.

'We've got to try and continue to persuade them that it's 'short-termism' of the worst kind.

'It's been statistically proven that the club won't necessarily get an uplift in fortunes. They might win a few games in the short term, but it tends not to last.

'It costs a lot of money and is a waste of resources because you find in this country that when a manager leaves, a lot of people leave with him.

'You end up with a lot of people losing their jobs and that brings instability to the football club.'
