Galaxy's Yallop resigns to coach Quakes

CARSON, Calif. -- Galaxy star David Beckham said Frank Yallop resigned as head coach of the Los Angeles MLS team Sunday night after its charity game for Southern California's wildfire victims. "Obviously, we're disappointed," Beckham said to reporters gathered outside the team's locker room. "We felt that he was the right man. We felt that he's a good manager and a strong character with the team. "But, we've all said, he's not walking away. He's looking after himself and he's looking after his family. It's what we would all do. We're sad to see him leave and we wish him all the luck and all the best." Multiple sources have confirmed to ESPN.com that Yallop is leaving the Galaxy to take up the reins of the expansion San Jose Earthquakes, a move that will be formally announced at a press conference on Tuesday. Exact contract details were not disclosed, but it's believed that Yallop has signed a three-year contract. The move sees Yallop rejoin the side that he began his head coaching career with in 2001, when he led the original Earthquakes to two MLS championships in 2001 and 2003. After leading San Jose to its second title, Yallop left the Earthquakes to take charge of the Canadian national team, coaching them for 2½ years before taking charge of Los Angeles in June of 2006. However, with the Galaxy, Yallop was never able to duplicate the success that came so quickly to him in San Jose. In 2006, Yallop was unable to overcome a disastrous start that predated his arrival, and the Galaxy missed the playoffs for the first time in their history. In 2007, despite having players like David Beckham, Landon Donovan, and Joe Cannon at their disposal, the Galaxy again failed to reach the postseason. Yallop contended that an unsettled roster and a lengthy injury list that included Beckham were the reasons for the Galaxy's struggles. Obtaining Yallop's services came at a price, but not a steep one. According to one source, San Jose parted with either a third or fourth-round pick in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft in order to bring Yallop on board. Such a low cost has led some to speculate that had the Earthquakes not been interested in Yallop, he would have been let go by the Galaxy. Yallop will now be asked to build a team from scratch, beginning with the Expansion Draft that is set to take place just days after the MLS Cup final on Nov. 18. That will be followed up by January's SuperDraft, with the Quakes beginning league play in April 2008. Galaxy spokesman Patrick Donnelly didn't comment when asked about Yallop.
