Defoe vows to stay and fight for Spurs place

Jermain Defoe is determined to fight a starting place at Tottenham and is ready to prove himself when given a chance. The 24-year-old has not started a game this season but insists he is committed to the club when called upon by boss Martin Jol, with Anorthosis Famagusta their opponents tomorrow in the UEFA Cup. Jol has hinted at fielding a strong team against the Cypriots, meaning all eyes will be on Defoe after he failed to make the matchday squad against Arsenal at the weekend. The England international, who scored 18 goals last season, is willing to bide his time for an opportunity. 'I've just got to be patient and wait for my chance,' he said. 'I feel fit, strong and am fully committed to the cause. 'Everybody knows how passionate I am about this club. 'I'll keep working hard in training and make sure I am ready physically and mentally when called upon.' Spurs chairman Daniel Levy wants Defoe to sign a new contract to avoid him leaving for nothing at the end of the season, but Jol insists that has nothing to do with team selection. 'There is no issue,' said Jol. 'Last year he didn't want to sign his contract and he had more starts than any other striker. He had more league starts than Robbie Keane. 'Daniel Levy is the man. They offered him a new contract. It's not about offering it's about signing.'
