Moyes feels Lescott call is just desserts

Everton manager David Moyes has welcomed Joleon Lescott's call-up to the senior England squad and described it as a 'just reward' for the defender. The 25-year-old has been drafted into Steve McClaren's squad for the Euro 2008 qualification double-header against Israel and Russia and Moyes believes his performances so far this season and last have more than justified his inclusion. Moyes told www.leaguemanagers.com: 'Joleon has come to the club and done really well since he arrived and I think it's just reward for his performances both at left back and at centre-half. 'So we are pleased for him but there's a lot of competition in the England team, he knows that and he'll need to continue playing well if he is to remain in the squad.' One Everton player who missed out on an international call-up this week is Mikel Arteta, the heartbeat of the Toffees midfield but still ignored by Spain coach Luis Aragones. Moyes added: 'I think Mikel knows that if he continues performing the way he has done over the last season or so then he will continue to get noticed or in some cases people will say not noticed. 'He's a good player and if the Spanish coach is over here looking at some of the Spanish players who play here then I'm sure he'll pop in and see Mikel. 'We're at the right half of the Premier League at this moment in time and I think that alone would justify even a visit to see how he's doing.' Moyes has defended the £11.25million signing of striker Ayegbeni Yakubu, insisting the deal represents value for money when compared to other transfers this summer. 'Did I take a deep breath (before spending a club-record sum)? 'No, because I think that in today's market what we've spent on Yakubu is pretty middle of the road as far signings go and as far as the money we spend. 'If I'm having to take a deep breath, well I think a few (managers) are gasping for oxygen by what they are spending.'
