Young shocked by England call-up

Ashley Young did not believe it was Steve McClaren on the phone when he received his maiden call-up to the senior England squad.

The Aston Villa winger, 22, has been drafted in by McClaren for the crucial European Championship double-header against Israel and Russia.

Young said on Sky Sports News: 'I think if anybody had seen me that morning when I was driving to training, they would have seen the shocked look on my face.

'I didn't actually believe it was the England manager ringing me. It's a dream to play for your country and I just want to go there and do well.'

Young has been promoted from the under-21 squad, with McClaren openly admitting the senior set-up has lacked players with express pace for some time now.

Young revealed what McClaren had told him when calling him up.

'He said he'd seen me towards the end of the season. He'd seen my performance for the under-21s in the summer and that I've started the season really well,' said Young.

'He said it was down to me that I'd got the call-up and that I fully deserved it.'

Young is now hoping to do well enough in England training to earn a start in either Saturday's game with Israel or Wednesday's visit of Russia.

'Hopefully, I'll get a start,' he said.

'I'm going there on the back of confidence and I've just got to do what's got me into the England squad and hopefully I'll play some part in the two games.'
