Yakubu out to form best partnership in league

Everton's record signing Ayegbeni Yakubu believes his partnership with Andrew Johnson can become the best in the Premier League.

The £11.25million striker netted after just 11 minutes of his debut in Saturday's win at Bolton, and Johnson was the creator.

Yakubu had not scored in 16 previous games for his former club Middlesbrough, but his impact had a crucial part to play in a 2-1 victory at the Reebok Stadium that sees Everton now holding down third place in the top flight.

Yakubu said: 'I really think that my partnership with AJ will become one of the best in the division. We have only played one match and had a couple of training sessions together, but we have hit it off straight away.'

The Nigerian star told Everton's official website: 'Everyone saw the way we played at Bolton, and they could see that the partnership was working from the start.

'I had a great partnership with Mark Viduka at Middlesbrough and now I can have another really good one here at Goodison Park with Andy.

'He is quick, he can run the channels well and we can be good together. We have worked together for only a couple of days, but I have watched him on the training pitch and know what his strengths are.

'And as we play and train more together, the partnership will only improve. He always works really hard, he may not always score himself, but the running and pace he has is very dangerous for defenders.

'All I have to do is to get on the end of his hard work in the box, which is how it was at Bolton.'

Everton's teenage striker Victor Anichebe has had talks with England Under-21 boss Stuart Pearce and told him that he would prefer to play for the country of his birth, Nigeria.
