Nigeria and Germany advance to semifinals

CHEONAN, South Korea -- Nigeria and Germany won their quarterfinals at the Under-17 World Cup on Sunday, completing a semifinal lineup of four former finalists.

Nigeria defeated Argentina 2-0 to end South American participation in the tournament, while Germany dominated old rival England 4-1.

Nigeria and Germany will meet in one semifinal, and the other will pit Ghana and Spain, which both won on Saturday.

Nigeria took the lead in the 33rd minute on a penalty kick by captain Lukman Haruna and doubled its advantage in added time at the end of the first half when striker Macauley Christanus scored his sixth goal of the tournament.

Sebastian Rudy put the Germans in front of the English 1-0 5 minutes into the second half, and Richard Sukuta-Pasu doubled that advantage 6 minutes later.

Rhys Murphy scored for England in the 65th minute, but Germany responded with a goal in the 74th minute by Dennis Dowidat and another 3 minutes before the end of regulation by Toni Kroos.
