Lazio bring in Muslera to end keeper quest

ROME, Sept 2 ( Reuters) - Lazio finally ended their quest for a new goalkeeper on Saturday when the Serie A club unveiled Fernando Muslera from Uruguay's Nacional.

Former Italy keeper Angelo Peruzzi retired at the end of last season and Lazio have struggled to replace him, with the transfer of River Plate's Juan Pablo Carrizo held up by red tape concerning passports.

Lazio have been forced to start the season with 43-year-old Marco Ballotta in goal and despite some tricky moments he helped his side into the Champions League stages with victory over Dinamo Bucharest.

Muslera is in the squad for Sunday's trip to Sampdoria.

'Muslera is a lad with personality, a great technique and a strong temperament. For now, he is here then Carrizo will also arrive,' Lazio president Claudio Lotito told a news conference.

'We want to settle the future of this position for the next 10 years.'

Lazio sporting director Walter Sabatini earlier resigned because of the club's struggles in the transfer market.

'I will reject his resignation. If a player signs a contract and then the wife cries because she does not want to transfer to Italy then that is not Sabatini's fault. He is a proud and responsible person,' Lotito added.
