Bruce keen to tie up deal for Atletico's Luccin

Birmingham boss Steve Bruce remains hopeful of signing Atletico Madrid midfielder Peter Luccin despite admitting there had been a 'complication' in completing the deal.

Bruce, whose side overcame Hereford 2-1 in the Carling Cup last night, is anxious to strengthen that department of his team with a playmaker before the transfer window closes on Friday.

He was unable to attract Mathieu Flamini away from Arsenal and withdrew from the deal for Tottenham's Hossam Ghaly after a dressing room bust-up.

Bruce said: 'We are looking at one or two things. We are hoping that at least one of them will materialise. When I analyse the whole thing, with the work that we've done, I've been very pleased.

'How far is the Luccin deal down the line? There has been a complication in the last 24 hours but we are hoping to resolve that, maybe on Wednesday, but we will have to wait and see.

'I am still confident that he will come but, with all of these things, you have to be patient. We are running out of time a little bit but we have to know one way or the other.

'If we don't get him, then we will have to look to someone else because that area of the pitch is where I am least covered at the moment.'

Bruce is convinced Luccin would make a big impact at St Andrews should the £2million deal go ahead.

He said: 'Peter is a very good footballer. You don't play 100 times for Atletico Madrid over the last three years without being a good footballer.

'He played for Celta Vigo three years before that, Marseille, Bordeaux. He is a top, top footballer. He will be a very good signing for us if we get him, something a bit different.'

Blues were indebted to one of Bruce's summer signings, Ghana number one keeper Richard Kingson, for holding on to overcome Hereford after a second-half fightback by Graham Turner's side.

Bruce said: 'He made two or three really good saves. He was the big plus point of the night for me. Apart from that we are just delighted to get through the cup tie.

'We saw him last week playing for Ghana and he did well. We watched him out in Sweden last season with FC Hammarby and he is a very good goalkeeper and he gives me selection problems which is nice to have.'

Turner has urged his side to repeat the form shown during the second half against City when they return to League Two action.

He said: 'We have assembled a squad that I think can play the game in the right manner, one or two exciting players with a bit of pace.

'If we take that belief of the second half against Birmingham into the league, and that same sort of endeavour, we can be okay. What we have to do is make sure it was not just a one-off.

'We have to make sure we go into the league and repeat that performance.'
