Allardyce looks for new blood as injuries mount

Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce admits he may have to dip into the transfer market once again to strengthen his defence after suffering a double injury blow.

With new owner Mike Ashley looking on at the Riverside Stadium, Allardyce saw his side twice pegged back after losing first Stephen Carr and then replacement Peter Ramage.

Carr could be sidelined for up to six weeks, while Ramage may have damaged knee ligaments, and that added to the manager's disappointment on a day when three points were briefly within his grasp.

Allardyce said: 'That, on top of not winning today, makes me feel like we have lost rather than drawn.

'We will have to deal with those injury situations tomorrow and see whether that takes us into the market on a more ferocious basis this week, which it might have to.

'I am well short now defensively, which is where my biggest problems have lain all summer.

'They are back there again now because of two injuries. It is typical, you always seem to get injuries where you are short.

'We are short in that area and we picked up not just one, but two injuries, and certainly one looks quite serious.

'With the window shutting, we will have to have a good look around and see how we go on.'

Charles N'Zogbia fired the visitors into a 22nd-minute lead with a spectacular right-foot strike, but Mido, who was abused throughout by the travelling fans, levelled within six minutes with his second goal in as many games.

Mark Viduka looked to have snatched victory on his return to Teesside when he turned Jonathan Woodgate to fire home 13 minutes from time, but Julio Arca struck three minutes later to ensure a share of the spoils.

Allardyce was unhappy with his side's defending on a day when his club once again issued a denial that Ashley is ready to sell it on, although he insisted he has no worries on that front.

He said: 'I have got no problems. We are moving the club forward as quickly as we can - not quick enough for me, but I am always the most impatient one at the football club anyway.

'But we are moving forward in every department. The more success you bring, the more your new owner gets hooked; the more your new owner gets hooked, the better it is for us all.'

Boro boss Gareth Southgate was delighted with the application of his players after throwing Woodgate and Luke Young into the fray just days after they returned to training from injury.

He said: 'We were more than a match for them and that should give us a lot of confidence.

'There is no criticism from me for any of my players because they gave absolutely everything and showed the guts to come back at a time when we might have tired with the players we had lacking in football.'

Meanwhile, Allardyce denied the club had received a £9million bid from Arsenal for striker Obafemi Martins, while he admitted he was awaiting developments on Albert Luque's proposed move to Ajax.
