Newcastle deny bids for club and Martins
Newcastle have moved to deny reports that the club and star striker Obafemi Martins have been the subject of recent bids.
It has been suggested in recent days that new United owner Mike Ashley might be willing to listen to offers for the north-east club he bought just two months ago, with consortia from China and Iceland mooted as possible buyers.
Following the close-season arrival at St James' Park of striker Alan Smith, reports have also consistently linked Martins with a big-money move away from Tyneside.
But chairman Chris Mort has dismissed the speculation as 'mischief'.
He told the club's website: 'I think most fans appreciate that there are those that make mischief by circulating stories about players and clubs.
'We have not, for example, had offers for Obafemi Martins or, for that matter, for the club itself.'
