Ligue 1: Marseille still looking for first win

MARSEILLE, France, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Nancy denied Olympique Marseille their first victory of the season when they snatched a 2-2 draw at the Stade Velodrome to go top of the Ligue 1 standings on Sunday. The hosts seemed on course for the win after striker Mamadou Niang and Djibril Cisse opened a 2-0 gap but ran out of steam in the closing stages. Senegal's Niang struck first in the 23rd minute when he volleyed home from a Taye Taiwo cross with France striker Cisse doubling the tally five minutes into the second half after being set up by midfielder Karim Ziani. However, midfielder Lorik Cana fouled Youssouf Hadji in the box to earn Nancy a penalty, which was converted by Benjamin Gavanon in the 64th minute. Marseille coach Albert Emon added steel to his midfield when he replaced Samir Nasri by Modeste M'Bami in the 76th minute but to no effect. Ten minutes from time, Marc Fortune broke down the right flank to deliver a perfect cross to Hadji who beat Cedric Carasso with a fine shot from the penalty spot. Nancy are joint leaders with Le Mans and Lorient on 10 points. All three teams have scored seven goals and conceded three in four matches. Marseille were booed off the pitch by the fans and lie 13th with three points. "If we want to live up to the expectations, we now have to win at home but also away from home," Cisse told reporters. Earlier on Sunday, Racing Lens were still searching for their first goal of the season after being held to a goalless draw at home by neighbours Valenciennes. Lens, under the guidance of former AJ Auxerre coach Guy Roux, are 18th in the standings with two points from three games. Valenciennes's good start continued and Antoine Kombouare's side are seventh with seven points from four matches. In another Sunday game, a Bakary Kone first-half goal was cancelled by Jimmy Briand four minutes from time as Stade Rennes secured a 1-1 draw at Nice. Nice are 11th on four points, one point adrift of 10th-placed Rennes. On Saturday, a Marama Vahirua double handed Lorient a 2-1 win over six-times champions Olympique Lyon. The result meant that the six-times French champions had suffered their worst start to a season since 1997/98. Le Mans were held to a 1-1 draw by Lille, also on Saturday.
