Beckham vows to cope with schedule

David Beckham insists he has no fears about playing for the Los Angeles Galaxy next week just 24 hours after facing Germany for England at Wembley.

The midfielder was yesterday named in England head coach Steve McClaren's squad for Wednesday's friendly against their traditionally bitter rivals.

Beckham will fly to England on Sunday morning from New York having played for the Galaxy in their Major League Soccer clash against the Red Bulls at Giants Stadium on Saturday night.

Following Wednesday night's friendly against Germany, Beckham will on Thursday morning fly back to Los Angeles where he hopes to play that night for the Galaxy in their MLS derby against Chivas USA.

'I haven't done that since I was eight or nine years old when we used to play games Saturday, Sunday,' Beckham said at a press conference in New York. 'It's definitely going to be different.

'I fly back on Thursday morning, arrive in LA about 12 o'clock and we've got a game at 7 o'clock. Hopefully I'll be able to get a bit of a rest on the plane and come back and play some of the game.'

Beckham insisted he did not think his continuing transatlantic commute for international games would not affect either his England or Galaxy careers.

'Only time will tell but I don't believe it will,' he said. 'I think I've adapted pretty well to the travelling so far.

'In the last three weeks we've done a lot of travelling and it does get tiring of course. But if you look after yourself on and off the pitch then you can cope with anything.

'It's not something I've been used to in my career. Playing in Europe we only travelled an hour or two hours to a game, so it's something I'll get used to, I have to get used to, and I don't think it's going to affect my performances for my country or for the Galaxy.'

Of his return to international duty next week, Beckham added: 'I'm honoured to be called into the England squad again.

'It's something that I've always taken seriously and will always take seriously until I stop playing for my country.

'Everybody knows that I want to play as many games as possible for England and that's why I'm travelling from New York and will travel from LA as well to go back to meet up with the team.'

Beckham said he was relishing the chance to face Germany at Wembley next week

He said: 'We're looking forward to the game on Wednesday. It's a big game but I'm not sure any game against Germany at Wembley is a friendly.

'But we're looking forward to it because they're a great team with great players and great tradition.

'And the last time we played them at Wembley they beat us 1-0. So we want to return the favour and hopefully we can.'
