Argentina - Confidence in question

The Argentina national women's team has had a tough time living up to the popularity and standards of the men's side having failed to make the group stages in their only previous World Cup in USA 2003.

However, they have apparently made remarkable progress under head coach Carlos Borello in recent years, which shall be put to the test in the group stages of this year's tournament.

The long-term development plan Borello created was put in place after the dismal Argentinean performance at the 2003 World Cup in which they lost all three of their games, scoring just one goal while conceding 15.

But, Borello kept the faith in his team by bringing in some fresh talent from the U19's, like the strong defender Eva Gonzalez and potent striker Maria Potassa.

The younger squad members compliment a veteran group already in the senior team which includes experienced goalkeeper Romina Ferro, the astute Marisa Perez in midfield and striker Mariela Coronel.

However, as there is no professional women's league in Argentina, almost all it's members are amateur players.

Supporters will be hoping that the hard work over the past three years aimed at mastering a fluent passing game pays off for the team that has an unfortunate lack of confidence in front of goal; which could prove to be their downfall in this tough group.
