McCarthy ruled out of UEFA Cup qualifier

Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy has been ruled out of the UEFA Cup match against MyPa on Thursday.

The South African will remain at home when the team travel to Finland tomorrow after suffering concussion at the weekend.

McCarthy collapsed on the pitch after an aerial collision during the 2-1 victory at Middlesbrough but was able to return with the squad.

Manager Mark Hughes said today: 'Benni has been checked over again and is okay.

'But he got a bang on the temple, which shook him up, and the MyPa game has come too soon for him.'

Hughes has paid tribute to two of his backroom staff as Benni McCarthy recovers from concussion.

The striker is ruled out of the UEFA Cup match against MyPa on Thursday in Finland after collapsing on the pitch during the victory against Middlesbrough on Saturday.

He fell to the ground at the Riverside Stadium after a sickening aerial collision, and there were fears for his health.

But such was the level of care afforded to him at the time he was able to return home with the squad.

Physio Dave Fevre was joined by club doctor Phil Batty and his Middlesbrough counterpart Brian Blacklidge in giving the South African on-the-spot treatment.

Hughes said: 'I have huge confidence in our medical department.

'I think everyone saw the great work Dave Fevre did on the pitch when Benni collapsed.

'I have known Dave since my time at Manchester United, and he is absolutely top drawer at everything he does - as is Phil Batty.

'While we are aware of how to look after our players, any extra care is always very welcome.'

Hughes will liaise with the medical team while he is in Finland, and McCarthy could return against Arsenal on Sunday.

But the Blackburn boss stressed: 'He will not come back until he is given the all-clear.

'He is going to train through the week; then he might make the game on Sunday. We will be guided by the medical department.

'Benni has been checked over again and is okay.
