Derby complete signing of Griffin from Portsmouth

Billy Davies believes new Derby signing Andy Griffin has 'great years ahead of him' after he completed his move from Portsmouth for a fee understood to be in the region of £500,000.

Griffin has put pen to paper on a three-year contract which will keep him at Pride Park until the summer of 2010.

The 28-year-old faces an instant reunion with his former team-mates as Derby entertain Harry Redknapp's side on the opening day of the Barclays Premier League campaign.

Griffin has become the Rams' seventh signing since they gained promotion from the Championship.

Davies said: 'Andy is an excellent player with a calm head and has a very good attitude. Like Andy Todd he also brings experience to the squad.

'I believe Andy Griffin has great years ahead of him. He's only 28. Every time I see him play he shows how consistent he is - and he can play in a number of positions.

'I really think Andy has got some unfinished business and a point to prove and we are delighted to have him on board at Derby. He has great experience, is an excellent defender, is very consistent and has a great attitude.'

Griffin could make his debut in Saturday's friendly with Espanyol at Pride Park.

He began his career at Stoke City as a teenager and made 64 appearances before earning himself a £1.5 million move to Newcastle.

Griffin won three England Under-21 caps while on Tyneside and made over 100 appearances in his six years with the Magpies before clinching a free transfer move to Portsmouth in the summer of 2004.

He made 43 top-flight appearances for Pompey but returned to Stoke at the start of 2006-07 campaign for a season-long loan.

Davies will now attempt to bolster his midfielder and attacking options but is understood not to be contemplating a move for Kilmarnock striker Steven Naismith.
