Anderson prepared to be patient

MARACAIBO, Venezuela - If Sir Alex Ferguson's promise to rotate the Manchester United squad next season was meant as a warning to the expensive young guns he has signed in the close season then at least one of them got the message.

Anderson, Ferguson's £17 million capture from Porto, acknowledged that his expensive price tag does not guarantee him a game.

'There will be rotation because it's a long season and there are a lot of games,' the 19-year old midfielder said from Venezuela, where he was a member of the Brazil squad that won the Copa America.

'All the players understand that, we're all prepared to play when we are called upon. That's the way it goes in the game.'

Anderson said Ferguson had not given him a clear definition of the role he wants him to fulfil next season but said he could not turn down the chance to sign for a man whose fatherly advice and decades of footballing experience are legendary.

'Everyone knows what he did with young players like Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham and his work with other players has also been very good,' Anderson said.

'That was very important, that they have done well. In addition, everyone knows that he's won the English League and the Champions League and how he has brought many players through. I was delighted to sign. It's a big club and a big chance.'

The 19-year old is one of several new arrivals at Old Trafford this close season. Ferguson has spent big in an attempt to hold on to the Premiership and make a concerted assault on the Champions League.

Among those who have been added to the potent mix of youth and experience are Nani, who signed from Sporting Lisbon for an undisclosed fee, Owen Hargreaves, who came from Bayern Munich for £17 million, and possibly Carlos Tevez, whose transfer from West Ham United is currently on hold as Manchester's lawyer attempt to iron out the legal wrangles.

Anderson said he wasn't fazed by the large number of bodies competing for places and said the possible addition of Tevez would be an excellent signing for the club.

'I think he's a great player and you can't have too many great players,' he said. 'But he's just one more great player at Manchester United. They have many great players; they've got Ronaldo, Scholes, Giggs, Rooney.'

The searing heat of Venezuela, where Anderson spent three weeks of his close season contesting the Copa America, is a long way from Manchester but the perky youngster has already taken English lesson and can't wait to get to know his more famous team-mates and show them what he can do.

He admits to knowing 'very little' about England outside the Premiership duels he has seen on TV but is confident the close skill that brought him comparisons with Ronaldinho, who is from the same city of Porto Alegre and was also a hero at the Gremio club, will stand him in good stead. No matter how much he plays.

'I know they play hard and fast but with skill but I know very little about it,' he said. 'But you have to be optimistic, I am always confident in my abilities.'
