Plan to bring pro soccer back to San Jose fails

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A plan to bring professional soccer back to San Jose State University failed after a developer and campus officials could not agree about how much the school should be paid.

"They came to an agreement that the deal just wasn't going to work," said Larry Carr, associate vice president for government and community relations at the university.

Developer Lew Wolff had proposed paying for a new stadium to house a revived Earthquakes Major League Soccer team and college football games on land next to Spartan Stadium. But the deal also would have required use of most of the university's 63-acre south campus for parking for stadium events, including concerts.

"We weren't able to get to a place where the financial return for university land would offset any negative impacts to what our students' needs are," Carr said.

No alternate sites have been identified.

Wolff's option to buy an MLS expansion franchise expires in 2009 and hinges on his ability to construct a stadium. He acquired the option last year when the team moved to Houston.

David Alioto, executive vice president of Earthquakes soccer, said in a note to supporters that the team was disappointed, but still excited about options in San Jose.
