MADRID, April 9 (Reuters) - Relegation-haunted Celta Vigo have sacked coach Fernando Vazquez.
'Celta have ended Vazquez's period as coach and would like to thank him for all the work he has done,' said a statement on the club's website.
The Primera Liga team acted after Sunday's 4-2 defeat at Recreativo Huelva left them third from bottom with nine games left this season.
Celta have the worst home record in the league, with one win from 14 games at the Balaidos stadium.
In February, the board gave Vazquez their backing after a run of 10 matches without victory, saying he would remain as coach until the end of the season.
Vazquez, 52, joined the club in 2004 and led Celta to promotion to the top flight in his first season.
Last year they finished sixth in the league to qualify for the UEFA Cup.
