Scotland's Quashie ruled-out by injury

Scotland midfielder Nigel Quashie has been ruled out of the European Championship qualifiers against Georgia and Italy.

The West Ham player reported to the squad yesterday with an injury to his left ankle.

He has now been allowed to return to his club after being assessed by team doctors.

Nobody has been brought into the squad as a replacement at this stage.

The former West Brom midfielder had five stitches inserted in an ankle he injured during his side's 4-3 home defeat to Tottenham on March 4.

An infection in the wound caused the ankle to swell up and he missed his club's victory at Blackburn on Saturday.

He did not train at the Scotland squad's first session yesterday, instead helping to launch a new away kit at a gathering of supporters in Glasgow.

The 28-year-old revealed last night that the ankle had ``settled right down'' and he hoped to play a part in Saturday's Hampden clash with of Georgia.

But he will now miss manager Alex McLeish's first game in charge and that against the world champions in Bari four days later.

The withdrawal is the first to hit McLeish since he named a 26-man squad, but he was already missing key pair Darren Fletcher and James McFadden through injury.

Both are suspended for Saturday's game but a broken foot has ruled Everton forward McFadden out of the Bari game, while Manchester United midfielder Fletcher damaged ankle ligaments.

Celtic defender Steven Pressley is also banned for the visit of the Georgians but he could return against Italy.

Hearts full-back Robbie Neilson and Lokomotiv Moscow striker Garry O'Connor were unavailable through injury, although O'Connor's has fallen down the pecking order after failing to turn up ahead of October's 2-0 defeat in Ukraine.

Georgia will be without AC Milan defender Kakha Kaladze, who has withdrawn from the squad with an ankle injury.
