Blackburn tops Arsenal, advances to quarterfinals
LONDON -- Benni McCarthy scored with four minutes remaining
to give Blackburn a 1-0 victory over Arsenal on Wednesday night and
a berth in the FA Cup quarterfinals.
The South African forward entered in the 60th minute of the
fifth-round replay, raced down the left and cut inside defender
Philippe Senderos before an angled 25-yard shot high inside the far
Last weekend, Arsenal lost 2-1 to Chelsea in the League Cup
Arsenal had two appeals for penalty kicks turned down by referee
Graham Poll in the first half. The first was when goalkeeper Brad
Friedel raced off his line and brought down Jeremie Aliadiere and
the second when Brett Emerton upended Fredrik Ljungberg inside the
corner of the area.
Friedel used his fingers to tip a shot from Julio Baptista over
the bar in the 53rd minute, then pushed a 20-yard shot from
Baptista around a post in the 71st.
Rovers will host Manchester City in the quarterfinals, when
Middlesbrough meets Manchester United, Chelsea plays Tottenham and
Plymouth hosts Watford. The games will be played March 10-11.
MILAN -- Udinese ended Internazionale of Milan's record 17-game winning streak in Serie A, holding the league leader to a 1-1 tie. Christian Obodo put Udinese ahead with a bicycle kick in the 47th minute and Hernan Crespo tied the score in the 66th. Inter's streak eclipsed last year's 10-game run by AS Roma and started after Udinese held Inter to a 0-0 on Oct. 22. Inter (21-0-4) remained the only unbeaten team in the Serie A and maintained a 14-point lead over second-place Roma (16-4-5). Roma rallied from a two-goal deficit for a 2-2 tie with Chievo as Francesco Totti scored twice to increase his league-leading total to 16. Palermo (13-7-6) is third with 45 points after a 0-0 tie with sixth-place AC Milan (12-4-9), which dropped three points behind fourth-place Lazio (12-6-7) for Italy's final spot in next year's European Champions League. Kaka's ninth-minute penalty kick was stopped by Palermo goalkeeper Alberto Fontana.
MONTCEAU-LES-MINES -- Montceau-les-Mines continued its surprising run in the French Cup, beating first division side Lens 1-0 on Wednesday to reach the semifinals. Montceau-les-Mines, which is in the equivalent of the fourth division and has only semiprofessional players, upset first division club Bordeaux in the previous round. Christophe Alidor converted a penalty kick in the 79th minute to beat Lens, which is second in the French league behind Lyon. Also Wednesday, Sochaux progressed with a 2-1 home win over defending champion Paris Saint-Germain on goals by Mickael Isabey and Moumouni Dagano. PSG got an own goal by Rabiu Afolabi. FRANKFURT -- Stuttgart reached the semifinals of the German Cup, beating Hertha Berlin 2-0 on goals by Cacau and Thomas Hitzlsperger. Eintracht Frankfurt, Nuremberg and Wolfsburg also advanced by winning their matches Tuesday.
