Blackburn tops Arsenal, advances to quarterfinals

LONDON -- Benni McCarthy scored with four minutes remaining to give Blackburn a 1-0 victory over Arsenal on Wednesday night and a berth in the FA Cup quarterfinals. The South African forward entered in the 60th minute of the fifth-round replay, raced down the left and cut inside defender Philippe Senderos before an angled 25-yard shot high inside the far post. Last weekend, Arsenal lost 2-1 to Chelsea in the League Cup final. Arsenal had two appeals for penalty kicks turned down by referee Graham Poll in the first half. The first was when goalkeeper Brad Friedel raced off his line and brought down Jeremie Aliadiere and the second when Brett Emerton upended Fredrik Ljungberg inside the corner of the area. Friedel used his fingers to tip a shot from Julio Baptista over the bar in the 53rd minute, then pushed a 20-yard shot from Baptista around a post in the 71st. Rovers will host Manchester City in the quarterfinals, when Middlesbrough meets Manchester United, Chelsea plays Tottenham and Plymouth hosts Watford. The games will be played March 10-11. Italy
MILAN -- Udinese ended Internazionale of Milan's record 17-game winning streak in Serie A, holding the league leader to a 1-1 tie. Christian Obodo put Udinese ahead with a bicycle kick in the 47th minute and Hernan Crespo tied the score in the 66th. Inter's streak eclipsed last year's 10-game run by AS Roma and started after Udinese held Inter to a 0-0 on Oct. 22. Inter (21-0-4) remained the only unbeaten team in the Serie A and maintained a 14-point lead over second-place Roma (16-4-5). Roma rallied from a two-goal deficit for a 2-2 tie with Chievo as Francesco Totti scored twice to increase his league-leading total to 16. Palermo (13-7-6) is third with 45 points after a 0-0 tie with sixth-place AC Milan (12-4-9), which dropped three points behind fourth-place Lazio (12-6-7) for Italy's final spot in next year's European Champions League. Kaka's ninth-minute penalty kick was stopped by Palermo goalkeeper Alberto Fontana.
