Adelaide coach quits after A-League final loss

SYDNEY, Feb 23 (Reuters) - The ugly fallout from Adelaide's 6-0 loss to Melbourne in last weekend's Australian A-League grand final claimed two high-profile victims on Thursday when the coach quit and the captain was demoted.

John Kosmina resigned as coach after club owner Nick Bianco described him as an "embarrassment" for his ungracious reaction to his team's loss in the grand final.

The coach had already been made to watch the game from the stands after being banished from the touchline for verbally abusing the referee in his team's win over a Newcastle the previous week.

Kosmina was put on notice earlier in the season when the club advised him to take anger management classes after he incurred a four-match ban for grabbing the throat of Melbourne captain Kevin Muscat during a match.

Capped 60 times by Australia in his playing days, Kosmina released a statement apologising for his actions.

'It is a decision I have made in the best interests of my family and, as importantly, the team,' he said.

'We have achieved so much in a very short space of time and for that, I am very proud.

'However, there have been times when my actions have got me into trouble and caused grief for a number of people, myself included, and I apologise for that.'

The club also announced that Ross Aloisi had been stripped off the captaincy after blaming the referee for his team's loss.

Angelo Costanzo was named as the new skipper, while defender Michael Valkanis was promoted to vice-captain after a charge of abusing a match official was dismissed for lack of evidence.
