Jewell stirs up more trouble in Dowd row

Wigan manager Paul Jewell has claimed a Premiership club have asked not to have controversial referee Phil Dowd in charge of their matches.

Jewell is facing a Football Association improper conduct charge for his rant at Dowd at Arsenal on February 11 and another charge is set to follow after his post-match comments to the media.

The Daily Mail reports Jewell as saying: 'We can't as a club say we don't want him but I know a certain club that has asked. I know for a fact that they didn't have him when they should have this season. Maybe some clubs have more influence than others.'

The Latics boss claims he has continued to receive support over the past few days in his ongoing feud with Dowd - including from another referee.

He alleged last week he had the backing of a number of 'big figures inside the game' as the fall-out following Wigan's defeat at Arsenal nine days ago intensified.

'I've continued to receive loads of support, in particular from people within the game, especially other managers,' said Jewell.

'But I had an interesting one yesterday from a referee. He's sent me a cheque for £25 towards my defence. That's just one of the hundreds of e-mails and letters the club has received. It shows an injustice was done.'
